As we've journeyed through the history of beer, we've encountered various brewing techniques, innovations, and revolutions. However, one aspect that often goes unnoticed is the role of women in brewing. From ancient times to the present day, women have been instrumental in the world of beer. Let's raise a glass to these unsung heroes and explore their contributions to brewing history.

In many ancient societies, brewing was a woman's task. The Sumerians, who are credited with the invention of beer, worshipped Ninkasi, the goddess of beer. The oldest known beer recipe, inscribed on a Sumerian tablet, is a hymn to Ninkasi. In these societies, women brewed beer for household consumption and for religious and ceremonial occasions.

The Middle Ages saw the rise of alewives or brewsters, women who brewed beer for commercial purposes. They were respected members of society, contributing to the local economy and often using their earnings to support their families. However, with the rise of guilds and the commercialisation of brewing, men gradually took over the profession.

The Industrial Revolution further marginalised women in brewing. Brewing became a large-scale, industrial process, dominated by men. Women were largely excluded from the industry, a trend that continued well into the 20th century.

However, the craft beer revolution has seen a resurgence of women in brewing. Women are once again becoming brewers, starting their own breweries, and creating innovative and award-winning beers. They're challenging stereotypes, breaking down barriers, and bringing a fresh perspective to the industry.

But it's not just about brewing. Women are also influencing the beer industry as educators, marketers, and beer sommeliers. They're leading beer tastings, educating consumers, and promoting craft beer to a wider audience.

The history of women in brewing is a testament to resilience and passion. Despite the challenges and obstacles, women have made, and continue to make, significant contributions to the world of beer. As we look to the future, it's clear that women will continue to shape the brewing industry, adding new chapters to the rich history of beer.
